Union is unlikely to put names of victims of police brutality on players’ shirts

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A plan to put the names of victims of police brutality on players’ shirts for the resumption of the NBA season at Disney World in Orlando, Florida is unlikely to continue, sources said. from the league to Yahoo Sports.

The National Basketball Players Association has been in talks with the league about ways to remember victims of police violence by putting a victim’s name on a player’s shirt to help keep the focus on the Black Lives Matter movement. League sources told Yahoo Sports.

But it is an extremely complex issue, and the union wants to exercise sensitivity in trying to push the movement forward.

Sources said there are some concerns within the union about the plan, particularly respecting the family’s right to choose the player they would like to honor the name, and with so many victims of police violence, there was a genuine concern about adding unnecessary pain to families if their loved ones were left out.

Discussions on the plan are ongoing and a decision regarding the names is not official, the sources said.

Players will continue to highlight individual cases of racial injustice on their social media platforms.

NBPA and the league continue conversations about what else can be done in Orlando to spearhead change within the black community and the justice system.

The season is slated to resume on July 30.
