Woman in critical condition after car crashed into tree, injuring four

A retiree is in critical condition and three others were injured after a car crashed into a tree on a busy highway.

All of the victims were inside the vehicle, which was traveling down Aigburth Road in Aigburth, near the junction with Mersey Road, when it struck a tree trunk in the central reservation.

The most seriously injured victim, a woman in her 70s, has been rushed to hospital.

Paramedics, police and firefighters rushed to the scene following reports of a collision at 6.40pm.

A helicopter from the Northwest Air Ambulance Service also attended the scene and landed on the field of the nearby Aigburth cricket club.

A tent had been erected near the crash site and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: “At 6.40pm, a car was reported to have collided with a tree on Aigburth Road.

Emergency services are present and the four occupants of the vehicle will be transferred to the hospital for evaluation.

“The condition of one occupant, a woman in her 70s, is described as critical.

“There are currently road closures and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”
