The Williams family is ready to leave Formula One after leaving the leadership of the team that bears their name.
Frank Williams turns 51 as the team manager of the team he founded, although the day-to-day running of the team was passed to his daughter in 2013. Claire Williams has served as an assistant manager in that time, but will be leaving that position. after the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Last month, the Williams family oversaw the sale of the equipment to private investment firm Dorilton Capital.
Ahead of last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, Claire Williams insisted the team would continue “as usual”, but less than a week later it was confirmed that she will be replaced.
Williams has appointed three people to its new board of directors. Matthew Savage, Dorilton Capital Chairman, Company CEO and Co-Founder Darren Fultz, and Eden Rock Group CEO James Matthews are the men who will lead Williams into his new era.
Williams delivered an emotional farewell message after the news was confirmed Thursday.
“It is with great regret that I am moving away from my role in the team,” he said. “I was hopeful to continue my tenure in the future and preserve the legacy of the Williams family for the next generation.
“However, our need to find internal investments earlier this year due to a number of factors, many of which were beyond our control, resulted in the sale of the equipment to Dorilton Capital. My family has always put our team Racing and Our People First and this was absolutely the right decision, I know in them we have found the right people to bring Williams to the front of the grid while preserving the Williams legacy.
“I have made the decision to step away from the team to allow Dorilton a fresh start as the new owners. It has not been an easy decision, but I think it is a suitable one for everyone involved. I have had the enormous privilege of I have grown up in this team and in the wonderful world of Formula One.
“I have loved every minute and will always be grateful for the opportunities it has given me. But it is also an incredibly challenging sport and now I want to see what else the world has in store for me. Most importantly, I want to spend time with my family.
“I would like to thank Dorilton for his support and for understanding my decision. I would also like to thank our fans who have stood by us through thick and thin. Our people at Williams have always been family, they have supported me. motivated during tough times and they are the ones I will miss the most.
“It is my genuine hope that the process we have gone through will bring them the success they deserve. And finally, I would like to thank my dad for all that he has given to the team, the sport and our family.”
