Andy Carroll seemed unhappy when it emerged that he would not be involved in Newcastle United’s clash with Leeds at Elland Road.
The forward looked furious and shook his head as Miguel Almirón’s number was upped and down to an unused substitute role.
Carroll hasn’t appeared for a whole month and while he’s been struggling with a minor injury, he used the 6-foot-4 center forward against a Leeds team that has been scrutinized for their lack of height.
In fact, Match of the Day pundits Alan Shearer and Ian Wright had scored a “height advantage” for West Ham last weekend, and perhaps Carroll felt it could have caused some damage in the final stages.
Carroll, who has yet to score for the club since his return, knocked on Steve Bruce’s door last season and asked for his chance and it will be interesting to see if he is involved in Saturday night’s game with Fulham.
Carroll is understood to be determined to play his role this season, but his frustration remains on the sidelines.
United’s worst effort against a newly promoted team in 62 years!
Leeds’ return to the Premier League was long overdue as Newcastle had not faced the Yorkshire side in the Premier League at Elland Road since 2003 in the days of Alan Shearer.
But the 5-2 loss to Leeds was the worst result against a newly promoted team since Elvis Presley was on the charts.
In fact, you’d have to go back to 1958 and a 5-1 loss to Blackburn for the last time Newcastle conceded five against a team that had just been promoted to the top flight.
A miserable milestone for Steve Bruce, but he’s better than Rafa Benitez after 50 Premier League games
The former Manchester United captain lost his 21st game to Newcastle in the Premier League on a night that marked his half-century of top flight matches in charge.
That’s 16 wins, 13 draws, and 21 losses if you want Bruce’s full stats.
Compared to Benítez, he actually has a favorable record in the top flight.
Benítez won 15, drew 13 and lost 22 after 50 games in charge in the Prem.
