What did the Prime Minister announce?

Johnson today presented an update to the nation on the border situation in the UK.

He stressed that the border delays are only occurring in Dover, adding that the delays also only apply to human-handled cargo.

The prime minister explained that this means that only 20 percent of products are delayed, including food and medicine.

He also added that the British can continue to shop “normally” thanks to the “strong and robust” supply chains of UK supermarkets.

He said the coronavirus is “constantly being defeated” thanks to an “international response”, adding that dozens of Britons have already received the vaccine.

The prime minister made a call with Frenchman Emmanuel Macron this afternoon, and the couple are creating a plan to allow products to start flowing through the Canal once again.

He said: “I just spoke with President Macron, we had a very good call, and we both understand each other’s positions and we want to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.”

“We are working to find a solution, as I say, as quickly as we can, to allow freight traffic to resume, between the UK and France, and to ensure that trucks can travel in both directions safely COVID “.

Johnson held an earleir coronavirus meeting today to discuss issues related to the new strain of Covid plaguing south-east England.

The mutant variant caused 16 million Britons to be plunged into new Level 4 restrictions, including the cancellation of Christmas bubbles.

The Covid strain, dubbed VUI 2020/01, is said to be 70% more contagious than the original strain.

The Prime Minister also chaired a Cobra meeting in an attempt to clear up issues at border crossings.

Images have shown huge queues of trucks seeking to cross the English Channel, after France closed all routes into the country from the UK, including via the Eurotunnel for fear that the new Covid strain would enter the country.

This led to supermarkets’ warnings about food shortages, especially food and vegetables in the run-up to Christmas.
