Joe Biden’s victory in Michigan late Wednesday put the former Democratic vice president within six votes of the electoral college from reaching the crucial 270-vote threshold to win the White House.
It significantly shortened the path for Donald Trump to win re-election, with only four states on the battlefield undeclared, and it put Biden a surprising distance from winning several of them.
In the rust belt, only Pennsylvania remains in play, while in the south, North Carolina and Georgia are up for grabs. In the west, ballots in Nevada continue to be counted as well.
As of 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Biden, the former Democratic Vice President of the United States, had amassed 264 votes in the electoral college, including 11 from Arizona and 10 from Wisconsin, two states Trump won in 2016. 214, after win 29 votes in the hotly contested state of Florida, according to Associated Press projections.
As the final states count their remaining votes, here are some possible outcomes.
Biden’s campaign has long pinned its hopes on building a “blue wall” in the upper Midwest and the rust belt. Pennsylvania, which has 20 votes in the electoral college, was always seen as crucial. Now that the Democratic candidate has obtained 16 electoral votes in Michigan and 10 in Wisconsin, he can win the White House by choosing Pennsylvania, or whatever other undecided state is left on the map.
In Pennsylvania, the results are expected to be tremendously close and will be contested. Four years ago, Trump won the state by 44,000 votes and Michigan by an even narrower margin of just over 10,000 votes.
Long before the polls closed, both Democratic and Republican analysts said Pennsylvania could become the “tipping point” state, shifting the electoral college balance in favor of either candidate.
As a result, Trump’s campaign has also been uniquely focused on winning Pennsylvania. Trump will have to maintain his current leadership in the “Keystone State” while the mail-in ballots are counted, and collect all the remaining states on the battlefield, plus Alaska, which he has yet to call, if he is to remain in office. .
