People ignore the two-meter rule of social distancing when they applaud caregivers outside a London hospital in “incredible” scenes captured on Westminster Bridge last night.
The shocking footage captures a large crowd gathering during weekly applause at 8 p.m. near St Thomas Hospital.
The video, shot by Dr. Damir Rafi, shows a crowd of people, including emergency personnel, police officers, and parents with young children, all ignoring the rules.
On Twitter, Dr. Rafi, who works at St Thomas Hospital, said he was “stumped by the lack of social detachment” captured in the video.
It occurs when thousands of people across the country flocked to its streets, gardens and windows to thank NHS workers and other key workers for the fourth week.
The video has sparked protests from many people who have been following strict government rules to help protect our NHS.
One woman said, “This is really irritating!
“I am a nurse and this scene made me sick !!!
“It is more appreciated if social distancing were a practice here than applause itself! Does it really MATTER?”
“Wait for more weeks of torture, more victims for this!”
Another furious: “Amazing Steve, keep your distance until 8 o’clock on a Thursday and then for the next 10 minutes it’s free for everyone!”
And many people criticized the lack of response to the crowd, with one person tweeting: “Idiots in #Westminster Bridge Everyone should be arrested by the policemen who were there and did nothing, and then everyone should be suspended for doing everything fucking about it. Idiots completely. ”
And a second person added: “People on Westminster Bridge applaud the health care staff they are going to meet in 10-14 days for their lack of social detachment.”
Many people pointed out the risk that the meeting could represent NHS staff.
One said, “Do these idiots on Westminster Bridge really believe they are doing the right thing?
“They are just raising two fingers towards the people they are supposed to be clapping for.”
“Give key workers adequate protection and pay, that’s all they want, not that people put everything at risk.”
Another furious: “I just saw over Westminster Bridge, for all of you who went there, you are complicit in the spread of the coronavirus and associated deaths that are a bunch of merry fools!”
“You disrespected the NHS by gathering in a large group!”
And a grandmother said, “Maybe I should make an appointment on Westminster Bridge with all my grandchildren who I am not allowed to see.”
A fellow parent agreed: “Yes. I would love to see my mother, my son is desperate to see his friends, it seems that a date on Westminster Bridge is in order.”
Another mother tweeted, “Absolutely shocking that my son hasn’t even been out for fresh air in 4 weeks and all these idiots on Westminster Bridge f ** how do you explain that to the teens you’re telling them to stay when they see this”.
Lawyer Aamer Anwar wrote on Twitter: “We have seen officers wrongly apply the # COVID19 laws, yelling ‘You are killing people’, using drones, no yoga or park benches, but here @metpoliceuk does not apply laws on # SocialDistancing on WM Bridge as people applaud the NHS that says #StayHomeStayLives.
“Public gatherings of just 2, some of us haven’t seen our parents in weeks, our children not in schools, nearly 14,000 dead when @metpoliceuk allows this madness on Westminster Bridge.”
Another person added: “Tonight I can’t get past these videos of Westminster Bridge.
“The fact that the POLICE is the one that does it.
“So if I had to invite the family over for a barbecue, the police could come and break it, but if I go to Westminster Bridge on a Thursday at 8pm to applaud, that’s fine.”
The government previously warned that the outdoors does not protect against the coronavirus, as they have emphasized that people should be kept two meters apart outside.
On March 22, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned: “Don’t think that fresh air in itself automatically provides some immunity.”
“The best thing everyone can do: if you are going out, look at the social distancing.
“Stay two meters away, it’s not such a difficult thing. Do it.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “The officers, along with other emergency services workers, gathered last night on Westminster Bridge to celebrate the work of all the key workers.
“A large number of members of the public also gathered to express their gratitude.
“While many people adhered to the social distancing orientation, some do not seem to.
“We regularly remind our officers of the importance of social distancing where practical, and we will continue to do so.”
