CHELSEA CRISTAL PALACE 4-0
- Goals: Ben Chilwell (£ 5.5 million), Kurt Zouma (£ 5.0 million), Jorginho x2 (£ 5.1 million)
- Attend: Chilwell, Tammy Abraham (£ 7.3 million), Kai Havertz (£ 8.4 million)
- Cousin: Chilwell x3, Jorginho x2, Zouma x1
Timo Werner (£ 9.4m) continues to frustrate his ownership of FPL after a third consecutive blank at Gameweek 4 against Crystal Palace.
Right after full time at Stamford Bridge in the early start of the weekend, only his teammate was benched. Reece james (£ 5.1m) had seen more sales than the Germany striker.
Having managed at least one attempted goal every 27 minutes for the first three weeks of play, Werner had only one shot against the Eagles.
BE YOUR PENALTIES
Having taken a 2-0 lead in Ben chilwell (£ 5.5 million) and Kurt zouma (£ 5.0 million), Chelsea won two foul penalties in Tammy abraham (£ 7.3 million) and Kai havertz (£ 8.4 million).
The midfielder lined up with Werner for the first pitch, while the captain César Azpilicueta (£ 5.9 million) had to steal the ball from Abraham to give Jorginho his second penalty of the day.
On the subject, Lampard stated:
“It has been fixed. On the field and in the locker room. No problems, just solved. I want leaders and I don’t mind a little conflict. If Tammy wants to take it because he wants a goal, they can put him in his place a bit and I appreciate his enthusiasm because his performance deserved a goal. But those are the rules. You don’t jump ahead of the list at any point, unless maybe someone has a hat-trick and we’re so comfortable that I decide. “- Frank Lampard
While we already knew that Jorginho was Chelsea’s first-choice penalty taker, Lampard did not provide the rest of the “roster”.
And unfortunately for Werner’s property, still not getting anywhere near kicking duty will likely count against him even more than it would in a normal season.
HOT START FOR CHILWELL
Former Leicester defender Chilwell broke the deadlock after 50 minutes and passed Vicente Guaita (£ 5.0 million) following an error of Mamadou sakho (£ 4.5 million) saw Tyrick mitchell (£ 4.1m) headed an Azpilicueta cross back into the box where the Chelsea left-back jumped.
And it was Chilwell’s cross, after a clear corner, that Zouma rose higher to head home above Sakho.
Having seen Willian (£ 8.0m) depart for Arsenal in the summer, Chelsea were left without their main set-piece receiver.
With James on the bench and Hakim Ziyech (£ 7.9 million) still injured, Chilwell took all but one Blues corner at Stamford Bridge, and also had a free kick involvement to increase his assist potential.
The defender also had 13 more touches in the final third than any other player at Stamford Bridge. On his new left back, Lampard explained:
“[He’s got that] the ability to be as high on the field when you want it to be, is not that it is reckless, but that it comes, it has the ability to get up and come back. Great quality on the ball. As for the signings we have brought, he knows the Premier League. It was just a case of his physical form. Everyone has had a bit of trouble, the guys who have come in. Whether they’re injured or they haven’t had enough preseason, we need to give those guys some time. ”- Ben Chilwell
EAGLES DO NOT FLY
While Chilwell stood out going forward, the fact that Chelsea’s new cap Edouard mendy (£ 5.0m) faced zero shots on goal is evidence that Lampard’s defense will face tougher tests.
Hodgson was well aware that despite an impressive first half in which Palace put down their hosts, a goal early in the second half put an end to their containment plans.
“We got four and unfortunately all four were very clear individual errors behind. And when that happens, it’s hard to come back from that unless you have a clear attack threat – we didn’t have it today. We didn’t have that at any stage of the game. In the first half our defense was good, our work off the ball was excellent. But on the ball we did not show the composure or the confidence that I would have liked the team to show. Against a team pushing well like Chelsea did today, it was always going to be a matter of making sure one didn’t score. Unfortunately we have given them a goal at 50 minutes and to top it all, we gave them two goals at the end with the two penalties. There were some bad performances today, that’s for sure. Players are more than aware [of that]. “- Roy Hodgson
Budget defender Mitchell was to blame for the first penalty shot, while Sakho compounded his own poor performance by giving away the second penalty.
Asked specifically about Wilfried zaha(£ 7.2 million) of non-participation, Hodgson added:
“You have to work hard to get those touches for yourself.” – Roy Hodgson
On what changed for his team in the second half, Lampard explained:
“The message at halftime was to change it: more speed, more movements, change it. Not many put four beyond Palace. The first half we started well, but then we got out a bit. There is not enough speed in our game in the last 20 minutes of the first half. The urgency of our game; we had to mix it up. The way we started [in the second half], there was a little more movement. We had to get Ben Chilwell into the game, he was reaching high ground but we couldn’t find him. “- Frank Lampard
Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): And Mendy; Chilwell, Zouma, T Silva, Azpilicueta; Kanté (Kovacic 83 ‘), Jorginho; Werner, Havertz, Hudson-Odoi (Pulisic 83 ‘); Abraham.
Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Mitchell, Sakho, Kouyaté, J Ward; Eze, McArthur (Riedewald 71 ′), McCarthy (Milivojevic 67 ′), Townsend; Zaha, Ayew.
ANALYSIS OF PREMIUM MEMBERS
Werner tactile heatmap (over) it is indicative of his lack of touches in the penalty area; the striker managed just two over 90 minutes.
While statistics won’t show that the German made many good runs, he made no significant contributions on the rare occasion that a teammate encountered him in space.
Christian pulisic (£ 8.3m) released Werner at the midline almost immediately after being introduced, but the forward’s lack of incisiveness allowed the Palace defense to regroup, quelling any danger.
Six players attempted more shots than Werner at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 4, and Lampard’s comments on Abraham’s performance perhaps suggest that the English forward may continue as Chelsea’s leader.
As mentioned above, Chilwell (41) led the way for the final third touches. His total of 68 touches in the opposition half was also 13 more than the next best Jorginho.
