The Welsh health minister has said he has not broken the closing rules after being photographed with his family eating potato chips in a park.

Vaughan Gething said the family had gone for a walk near her home over the weekend and stopped to take her because their young son was hungry.

Speaking at the Welsh government’s daily press conference, Gething said: “I went for a walk with my family as many of us have done over the weekend. My son was on his scooter … We stopped to eat on the way. All of those things are within the regulations. There is absolutely no violation of the guide or the rules. “

Really disappointing that @Sun We are planning to print a photo of myself on a walk with my wife and young son over the weekend. Our 5 year old was hungry and we bought some fries, all within the rules.

Exercise during confinement is a very sensitive issue in Wales. Starting on Wednesday, people in England can exercise as often as they like and drive to places to run, walk or bike.

The Welsh government has said that people should not travel by vehicle to exercise unless there is a good reason to do so, and has urged people living in England not to travel to Wales to visit the hills or beaches.

Gething said he had been contacted by a UK tabloid about photographs of him in the park.

He said: “It is truly disappointing in the midst of a global pandemic when more than 1,100 people have lost their lives in Wales and more to come and complex decisions difficult to make every day to have a deliberately useless investigation of a journalist from a national newspaper that wants to suggest that I have done something wrong when I have not.

“I think we should all be better than this. “There is not a single thing that the journalist intends to write that helps save a single life or that helps the public with the key message about following the blocking rules.”

The Welsh government said walking a couple of miles was exercising locally and the purchase of takeout food was allowed under its regulations. Sitting and eating takeaways while exercising with family members was also allowed.

A spokesperson said: “Absolutely nothing that has been done that the minister has done contravenes Welsh government regulations. Walking and eating food on the road with members of your household is allowed. “

Last month, Gething accidentally broadcast a rude tirade about one of his colleagues during a virtual session of the Welsh Parliament.
