My fellow citizens, in the work ahead we will need each other. We need all our strength to persevere in this dark winter. We are entering what may be the virus’s darkest and deadliest period. We must put politics aside and finally confront this pandemic as one nation, one nation. And I promise you this, as the Bible says: “Crying can last one night, joy comes in the morning.” We will get out of this together. Together.
Look folks, all of my colleagues that I serve in the House and Senate here, we all understand that the world is watching. Looking at all of us today. So here is my message for those who are beyond our borders. America has been tested and we have come out stronger for it. We will repair our alliances and commit ourselves to the world once again. Not to face the challenges of yesterday, but the challenges of today and tomorrow. And we will lead not only by the example of our power, but by the power of our example.
American colleagues, moms, dads, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. We will honor them by becoming the people and the nation that we can and should be. That is why I ask you to say a silent prayer for those who lost their lives, those left behind and for our country. Amen.
Friends, this is a time of testing. We face an attack on our democracy and the truth, a raging virus, biting inequality, systemic racism, a climate in crisis, the role of the United States in the world. Any one of these would be enough to challenge us in a profound way. But the fact is, we face them all at once, presenting this nation with one of the greatest responsibilities we have ever had. Now we will put ourselves to the test. Are we going to step forward?
It is time to be bold because there is so much to do. And this is for sure, I promise you. We will be judged, you and I, on how we solve these cascading crises of our age. We will be up to the occasion. Will we master this rare and difficult hour? Will we fulfill our obligations and pass a new and better world to our children? I think we should and I’m sure you do too. I believe we will, and when we do, we will write the next great chapter in the history of the United States of America. American history.
A story that may sound like a song that means a lot to me is called American Anthem. And there is a verse that stands out at least for me and goes like this:
‘The work and prayers of centuries have brought us to this day, which will be our legacy, what will our children say?
Let me know in my heart when my days are over, America, America, I gave you my best. ‘
Let us add our own work and prayers to the unfolding history of our great nation. If we do this, when our days are over, our children and our children’s children will say of us: “They did their best, they did their duty, they healed a broken land.”
