I don’t know anyone else, but I never realized how much food we received in a week.
We are generally quite busy at home with work and social arrangements, so I hadn’t realized how much we depended on meals, grab-and-go before closing.
It was still doing a normal store but it seemed to last us much longer than at closing.
Now we are both working from home and of course we only leave the house occasionally for essential items or for exercise, it seems that we are coming so lots of food.
So when I saw that Marks & Spencer were delivering boxes of food, I thought that it could help us until I had to do a full store and postpone the next trip to the supermarket a little more: I hated the last one, it was chaos.
A quick online look at the boxes available on the M&S website presented me with five options: the Vegetarian Food Box for £ 30; seasonal fruit box for £ 20; the box of meat for £ 45; box of select mixed greens for £ 17; and the box of mixed vegetables for £ 15.
On food boxes, M&S says, “Whether it’s to send a loved one or to replace your store cabinets, discover our range of M&S food boxes, which are filled with essential kitchen items like pasta and sauces, plus some sweet goodies, including butter cookies and Percy Pigs.
“We also have boxes full of fresh produce or meat, created to help feed a family of four. Please note that the maximum order is one box of each type per customer. Thank you for your understanding.
Take the Great Big Lockdown survey and tell us how it has been affected.
The vegetarian food box seemed to have a good variety of items, so we went for that. Despite the fact that neither of us are vegetarians, it seemed to have the kind of items we needed.
Describing the box, M&S says: “A selection of essential meatless M&S favorites, including pasta, rice, and delicious sauces to create a variety of tasty foods. There are even some treats that include Percy Pigs for the whole family to enjoy.
“In case of supply difficulties, we reserve the right to include slightly different products in the M&S Food box: these alternative products will be of equal quality and value.”

I was pleased to see that there was a delivery space for the following day. It seemed like I already had an M&S account online (though I have no idea when I set this up as we generally don’t tend to shop at M&S) and it was easy to pay and organize.
They kept us updated by email and text message and they told us what time our order would be delivered and indeed it arrived on time and we were presented with a brown box placed on our doorstep.
Inside, under the loose packaging, were all our items. He had previously ordered a Morrisons food box, and I found that some of the items seemed to have been “beaten” a bit, but the items in the M&S box looked perfect.
This is what came in our box:
- Two cans of thick vegetable soup
- A can of carrot and coriander soup
- A can of vegetable curry
- A can of chopped Italian tomatoes
- A can of baked beans
- Couscous
- Easy to cook long grain rice
- Authentic Italian pasta penne
- Italian pasta sauce with tomato
- Pasta sauce with tomato and herbs
- Roasted and salted almonds
- Large roasted and salted peanuts
- coffee
- Breakfast mix tea bags
- Two packets of butter butter scotch fingers
- A bar of “intense dark chocolate”
- A milk chocolate bar
- Giant milk chocolate buttons
- A pack of Percy pigs
- Aloe vera toilet paper (four rolls)
And this is what we have used and what we have left (the box arrived on Tuesday at lunchtime) …
Tuesday: My partner and I shared the carrot and coriander soup for lunch with some bread to dip (we already had the bread). For dinner, we had the Italian tomato pasta sauce with some of the authentic Italian pasta Penne out of the box, which was delicious. We started with the Percy Pigs package and the milk chocolate bar (we just couldn’t resist).

Wednesday: The soup didn’t fill us up enough the day before, so today we had one can of vegetable soup each (minus the bread this time). For dinner, we took the vegetable curry and added half a can of chopped Italian tomatoes to make it go a little further (since otherwise it would not have been enough for both of us) and added a little coconut cream that we already had. in.
We had the curry with rice out of the box. We clean the rest of the Percy Pigs package and the rest of the chocolate bar (oops).
Thursday: For lunch, we used the baked beans for beans on toast (we already had the bread). We used items we already had for tea, as we still didn’t feel like pasta and there was nothing else left in the box that would have made a full tea: we’ll have the other pasta sauce for dinner another night. The gigantic milk chocolate buttons were also eaten today (does anyone else seem to be eating more goodies in the running of the bulls, or is it just us?)
As I write, it’s Friday night and we have a few articles left.

My partner doesn’t like walnuts and almonds, but luckily I do. So I started with the roasted and salted almonds and now half a packet of the shortbread is gone too, they are perfect to accompany a cup of tea.
I feel like we wouldn’t normally eat that many sweet things in a given week, but since it was there, we did!
This is what we had four days after receiving the box:
- A pack of butter scotch butter fingers
- A bar of “intense dark chocolate”
- Cous cous: This has not been used yet, but we plan to use it with koftas etc.
- Penne authentic Italian pasta: until now we have only used it for a meal
- Easy to cook long grain rice – so far we have only used it for one meal
- Pasta sauce with tomato and herbs
- Roasted and salted almonds: most of the complete package remains
- Large roasted and salted peanuts
- Coffee: we already had something so I haven’t used it yet
- Mixed tea bags for breakfast – we already had some, so I haven’t used them yet
- Aloe vera toilet paper
I definitely think this box is ideal for those with a sweet tooth and for those who want to replenish their closets with canned food, pasta, tea bags, etc.
I wouldn’t regularly order it for us both to live. But it made a nice change and it means we have some useful items left. We will use everything in the box and I think it was worth it considering the amount of items we received. We paid a total of £ 33.99 including delivery.
