WBA Reports Racist Online Abuse of Callum Robinson to Police; Swansea’s Jamal Lowe abused on Instagram | Football news

West Brom has reported racist abuse targeting Callum Robinson on Instagram to West Midlands Police, the same day that Swansea’s Jamal Lowe was also targeted for racist abuse on the platform.

After scoring twice in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Chelsea, a user posted monkey emojis in response to a post Robinson made about the game on his profile.

Robinson took the screen and highlighted the messages in an Instagram story.

Albion said in a statement: “The club is dismayed by the messages and will offer Callum any help and support he may need in response to the incident. Albion will continue to face all forms of discrimination and assist authorities with their investigations, seeking the toughest legal punishment available.

“It is deeply disturbing that scoring two goals in a soccer game can provoke such a reaction. There is no place for racism. Anywhere. Challenge it, report it, change it.”

Chelsea said in a statement: “Chelsea FC is displeased with the social media posts tonight directed at West Bromwich Albion player Callum Robinson.

“Chelsea FC considers all forms of discriminatory behavior to be totally unacceptable.

“Racism has no place in this club and when there is sufficient evidence that a Chelsea owner or member is involved in such behavior, we will take the strongest possible action against them.”

Jamal Lowe was abused after Friday night’s loss

Sky Sports News is attempting to contact West Midlands Police and Facebook, which owns Instagram, for comment.

Swansea’s Lowe also reported being subjected to racist abuse on the social media platform following a 1-0 championship loss in Birmingham on Friday night.

On Saturday, a user responded to one of Lowe’s Instagram posts with a derogatory message and two monkey emojis. Lowe wrote “some serious idiots” when he reposted the message in a later Instagram story.

Facebook, owner of Instagram, said Sky Sports News the account from which the abuse was sent has been deleted.

The incident is the most recent example of a footballer being racially abused on social media platforms and Lowe is the third Swansea player to have suffered such abuse this year.

Midfielder Yan Dhanda suffered abuse following an FA Cup loss to Manchester City and Ben Cabango was one of two Wales players attacked after an international match last week.
