Ward closed at second Welsh hospital as coronavirus cases grow

A second hospital in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board area was affected by several cases of coronavirus and had to close a ward.

There are 22 cases at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, as of Wednesday, September 30.

The Cwm Taf Morgannwg Board of Health said strict infection prevention and control procedures were being followed and further testing was conducted at the hospital.

The outbreak at the board of health’s Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant has seen 89 people infected and the death toll has risen to 10.

There are a number of time restrictions to try to control the spread, including the temporary suspension of elective surgery with the exception of a very small number of urgent cancer cases that have been prioritized, the diversion of emergency admissions to other hospitals with the exception of children, and the diversion of patients from the Welsh Ambulance Service to other hospitals with the exception of children.

The Royal Glamorgan Hospital A&E remains open to walk-in patients and those who can be treated in an emergency department area.

There are no changes to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s autonomous pediatric wards which remain open as do mmental health services in the hospital.

The health board field hospital, ‘Ysbyty’r Seren’ in Bridgend, will open on Thursday, October 8 for non-Covid patients who are medically fit for discharge but still require some care needs and the hope is that It will help build capacity for patients who need more specialized care.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board Director of Public Health Dr Kelechi Nnoaham said: “Temporary restrictions on services at Royal Glamorgan Hospital will remain in effect until we are absolutely certain that we have contained the spread of the virus on the site. .

“The opening of our field hospital next week will create capacity in the hospital for patients who need the most specialized care and allow others to move to a Covid-free environment.

“Together with Public Health Wales, we continually review the situation and recognize the great impact that our decisions are having on our patients, our communities and our staff. We thank everyone for working with us at this challenging time.

“The number of cases at Prince Charles Hospital is not linked to the cases at Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

“The safety of our patients and staff at all of our sites continues to be our first priority and we remain grateful to all members of our community who continue to adhere to the guide to help control the spread of this virus.”

The latest cases follow news that the number of people hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus has more than doubled in a week.

Some 191 beds were occupied with confirmed Covid-19 patients, the highest number since the end of June.

The latest figures from the Government of Wales show that 550 beds were being used by confirmed, suspected or recovering coronavirus cases on Tuesday, September 29.

That was an increase of 343 beds the week before and equates to 7% of all hospital admissions.
