One person died and several were injured after a shooting at a synagogue in Vienna, according to reports.
Images and video appear to show gunfire in the area of one of the city’s main squares, with the police on the scene tonight.
The editor of the Falter newspaper said one person died after shots were exchanged around 8 p.m. local time.
Vienna police confirmed on Twitter that there is a “major police operation” in the area and that there are “injured people”.
One person has been arrested, according to the APA news agency.
The agency also reported that a police officer was shot and seriously injured, citing the state Interior Ministry.
In a series of tweets, Polizei Wien said: “There is a larger police operation in the first district of Vienna (downtown area). Officers are on site and checking the situation. We keep you informed on the matter.
“Shooting in the Inner City district – people are injured – KEEP AWAY from all public places or public transportation.
“Several shots in the central district of Vienna – people are injured – do not stay in public areas! Stay home!”
The Austrian public broadcaster ORF reports that witnesses said that several shots were fired shortly after 8 pm local time.

The attack reportedly took place on the street that houses the city’s main synagogue in the area of a nearby square, Schwedenplatz.
Many have spoken of their shock at the events of tonight.
One person tweeted: “I just found out about Vienna … please be safe everyone, my thoughts are with you.”
