Jurgen Klopp was relatively cool after Liverpool suffered their second Premier League defeat of the season, but his post-match press conference was still interesting.
After losing 1-0 at Southampton, Klopp’s Reds remain at the top of the table, but have now lost seven points in their last three games since beating Crystal Palace shortly before Christmas.
Manchester United will move three points ahead of Liverpool if they win their match at Burnley, which is scheduled five days before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team visits Anfield.
And Liverpool’s old rivals received a spontaneous mention from their German coach, as they spoke to reporters via the video link after the match. He questioned the decision not to impose a penalty on his team, with a reference to how much United he has received in recent years.
That should add a little spice to the proceedings when the two clubs meet in less than a fortnight. This couldn’t be your response to Rafael Benítez’s infamous ‘facts’ monologue, could it?
“What Andre Marriner did with Sadio Mané tonight, I’m not sure it’s right,” Klopp said.
“Man Utd had more penalties in two years than I have in five and a half years.”
