Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are fighting for their lives after they were shot in an apparent ambush that was captured on video.
The couple, a man and a woman, were sitting in their patrol car in Compton when a gunman approached from the side and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Authorities said both were in critical condition after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds and were currently undergoing surgery.
A search for the attacker is now underway.
The Angels The county Sheriff’s Department released surveillance footage from the shooting, saying in a statement: “The gunman approached officers and opened fire without warning or provocation.”
Los Angeles Police Department Captain Gisselle Espinoza joined several law enforcement officials in expressing her shock at the attack.
“I hope this monster is captured soon,” he said.
“I am sick to my stomach. The deputies are in my prayers.”
It was unclear if a particular suspect was being sought.
It comes after Los Angeles sheriff’s detectives shot and killed a man in Compton Thursday after he allegedly opened fire on them while serving a search warrant.
There is no suggestion that the two incidents are related.
