The F2004 led Michael Schumacher to his seventh and final world championship in 2004, and the German won 13 of 18 races that season with him. His teammate Rubens Barrichello added two more victories.
Shortly before the Tuscan GP, Michael’s son Mick drove an example of the car by Mugello, as part of the celebrations for Ferrari’s 1000th race.
The F2 driver drove the same car at last year’s German GP meeting at Hockenheim, and in the past he also demonstrated one of his father’s Benettons at Spa.
Vettel took time to get a closer look at the car before the race, and made the reveal about his interest in it in an interview with his former Red Bull Racing teammate Mark Webber, who raced for Team Jaguar that season. .
Their conversation was as follows:
Vettel: “This is my favorite car. Did you run [against] this car?
Webber: “I think I collided with this car once in Turkey with Michael, he was not very happy with me. But when I see that car I only think of the pure performance, and Michael on top of things, of course. It was extraordinary times, what? no? isn’t it?
Vettel: “I was just saying, if you look at our cars, our cars are a lot bigger today. Obviously we have a lot more downforce, but this car is 160-170kg lighter than ours, a big difference.”
Webber: “You’ve been adding to your collection recently. Do you have cars of this generation?”
Vettel: “No, there was that one, not that exact one, but the same year it went on sale, but it was too expensive.”
Webber: “Come on Seb!”
Vettel: “It was! It’s an amazing car. You’ll hear about it later.”
Vettel’s current teammate Charles Leclerc, who turned seven in 2004, also took a break from his race preparations to look at the car.
“He looks crazy, he looks very, very cute,” said the Monegasque pilot. “But mostly it sounds good compared to what we have now. It’s part of Ferrari history, a very special part of Ferrari history, and it looks beautiful.”
“I had the opportunity to drive the 2003 car once, never the 2004 car, but I hope in the future I will have the opportunity to drive one of those.”
