METERMercedes driver Valtteri Bottas will start Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on pole position after finishing fastest in qualifying.

Bottas denied Hamilton pole position for Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after beating his Mercedes teammate by just 0.097 seconds.

In Formula One’s return to Imola, the track that claimed Ayrton Senna’s life 26 years ago, Bottas did his best to fire Hamilton with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in third place.

Hamilton had been on his way to taking his career 98 pole after improving with his last race, but Bottas was even quicker in a nail-biting session to take the loot.

“You always have to fight for it because they are never easy poles,” Bottas said.

“I really enjoyed it. This track where you push hard is beautiful. I knew I had to improve on the last lap and I found those little gains that were needed. It’s a great feeling when you get them.”

“It’s going to be a good fight tomorrow. It’s one of the longest races on the schedule at Turn 1. No doubt Lewis and Max will be chasing me, but it’s a good place to start.”
