Some of the mystery surrounding the puzzling appearance and disappearance of a monolith in Utah seems to have been explained.

Conspiracy theorists had speculated that the structure, which was discovered in the desert late last month, was remote aliens, but a photographer has revealed that he saw a group of men take him away.

In an Instagram post, Ross Bernards said he had seen four men removing the monolith on Friday night before mysteriously saying, “Leave no trace.”

Mr. Bernards explained that he had driven to the site with three friends to take pictures of the monolith.

“I had just taken some photos of the monolith under the moonlight and was taking a break, thinking about the settings I needed to change for my latest drone flight battery when we heard some voices coming up the canyon,” he said.

“4 guys turned the corner and 2 of them walked forward. They gave the monolith a couple of shoves and one of them said ‘You better have your pictures.’

“Then he gave him a big shove and he flipped over, leaning to the side. He yelled at his other friends that they didn’t need the tools. The other boy who was with him on the monolith said ‘so don’t leave trash in the desert'” .

The photographer described how the men pushed the structure until it landed on the ground with a “heavy blow”.

“They quickly broke it and as they were taking it to the wheelbarrow that they had brought, one of them looked at all of us and said ‘Leave no trace,'” he said.

Explaining why his group didn’t stop the men, Bernards said they were “right” in removing the monolith because people eager to see the mysterious structure were starting to ruin the local landscape.

“We could literally see people trying to approach it from all directions to try to reach it, permanently altering the intact landscape,” he said.

“Mother nature is an artist, it is better to let her art go free.”

The monolith’s strange appearance had sparked speculation as to how it had come to be there, especially after a similar structure was discovered in Romania two weeks later.

Some have guessed that the monolith is a tribute to the 2001 science fiction film: A Space Odyssey, in which apes discover a metal monolith in the desert.

the Utah The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) had indicated that it would not investigate her disappearance, saying: “The BLM did not remove the structure, which is considered private property.

“We do not investigate crimes that involve private property, which are handled by the local sheriff’s office.”
