What we know so far

An accident involving a truck forced a major highway to close and caused chaos at rush hour around the Mersey Gateway Bridge and the Knowsley Expressway.

The A562 Speke Road in Widnes is currently closed in both directions between Hale Road and Ditton Road due to the accident.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area.

INRIX Travel Monitors confirmed: “A562 Speke Road in both directions closed, queuing due to accident, truck involved between Hale Bank / Hough Green (Cheshire) turnoff and Ditton Road (Mersey Gateway, Widnes). Congestion on the Knowsley Expressway. “
The accident occurred around 7.40am on the Liverpool-bound side of the road, however it is affecting both sides of the road.

Widnes Police tweeted: “Officers and ambulance at the scene of a traffic collision on the Liverpool-bound side carriageway of Speke Road A562, slowing down traffic on Mersey Gateway. Traffic stops on both sides. AVOID IT AREA if possible. Roads will be closed imminently. “

They later added: “The A562 Speke Road in Widnes is currently closed in both directions between Hale Road and Ditton Road due to a collision. Avoid the area.”
