UK Weather Forecast: First White Christmas in 5 years on cards for some areas

Snow is forecast to fall on Christmas Day for the first time in five years tomorrow, but dozens of flood warnings remain in effect across the country.

Many parts of the UK have experienced unstable conditions in the days leading up to the holiday period, with heavy rains falling across large swaths of the country on Wednesday.

This rain will largely stop on Christmas Eve, paving the way for cooler and icy temperatures on the morning of December 25.

Alex Burkill, a meteorologist with the Meteorological Office, told the Palestinian Authority news agency: “The night from Christmas Eve until Christmas Day is going to be very cold, with widespread heavy frosts early on Christmas morning.

Some parts of Britain will see a white Christmas

“So it could be a ‘white’ Christmas as many people are going to wake up to a frost.”

Christmas Day will be dry and settled in most of the UK, however there may be showers in the eastern parts of England bringing the possibility of sleet or snow in the morning.

Mr Burkill said: “So in the Lincolnshire, Yorkshire area, maybe even East Anglia, there could be some showers for the first few hours and with the cold weather it is not unreasonable that there is a wintry element to them, so some showers could be falling like sleet or snow.

“They will be very light, scattered, not everyone will see them in any way, and in most areas it will be a pretty dry day, just cold.

“But there is a possibility that we may see some snow showers in the eastern parts of England, particularly early on Christmas Day.”

There will be widespread frosts

Burkill said a strip of rain will traverse parts of the northwest during the day, particularly in Scotland, which could lead to sleet or snow on higher ground.

The meteorologist later suggested that small amounts of snow could settle on the hills and mountains of Scotland.

He added: “Technically it could be a white Christmas there, but what we can be pretty sure of is that there is not going to be widespread snow, people are not going to wake up to those picturesque layers of snow that many people expect.” for.”

The Met Office has said that Boxing Day will bring a return to unstable weather, with outbreaks of rain in the north moving south along with strong winds.
