Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick refuses to confirm £ 100m financing offer to Manchester

Jenrick declined to confirm reports that the city was offered an additional £ 100 million in funding to accept the lockdown while appearing on the Today show this morning.

However, he suggested that today was the deadline for Manchester leaders to agree to enter Level 3.

Mr Jenrick said: “The people of Greater Manchester want a single, coordinated public health message.

“That is what the Prime Minister wishes to do. That is why we have gone to so much trouble trying to reach an agreement with the local leaders.

“I hope they will come forward today, support us and we can reach that kind of agreement.

“If not, then we will have to consider other options.

“Because obviously the government has the primary responsibility to protect people in all parts of the country, including Greater Manchester, but … doing so by enforcement has never been our desired approach.”
