UK coronavirus live: Burnham says pubs closing time at 10pm “does more harm than good” | Politics

Good Morning. Boris Johnson only announced the rule that forces pubs in England to close at 10 p.m. six days ago, and it only went into effect on Thursday, but he’s already under pressure to abandon it. This morning on the Hoy program Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, said he thought it was counterproductive. He explained:

There needs to be an urgent review of emerging evidence from police forces across the country. My intuition is that this curfew is doing more harm than good … It creates an incentive for people to gather on the streets, or more likely to gather at home, and that is the opposite of what they are trying to do. our local restrictions here. what to do.

So to be honest, I don’t think this has been fully thought through.

Burnham said that in Manchester on the weekend, supermarkets were “packed to the brim” after 10pm with people buying alcohol so they could continue drinking after the pubs closed.

He also said that the 10pm closing time was damaging bars and restaurants that had taken “massive measures” to ensure Covid’s safety.

When asked if he thought the 10 pm rule should be dropped, he replied, “My instinct would say it probably should.”

Here is the agenda for the day.

12:00 h: Downing Street lobby briefing.

12:15 pm: The Scottish government is expected to hold its daily briefing on the coronavirus.

2.30 pm: Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, answers questions in the Commons.

15:00 h: Sir Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, delivers his speech at the party’s online conference.

3.30 pm: An urgent question is expected from Commons regarding rCovid’s restrictions for students.

After 3.30 pm: Parliamentarians hold a general debate on the coronavirus.

Also in Brussels, Michael Gove, the Cabinet Office minister, and Maroš Šefčovič, the vice-president of the European Commission, are co-chairing a meeting of the joint committee, the body created to implement the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

Politics Live has doubled as the UK’s coronavirus live blog for some time and given the way the Covid crisis overshadows everything, this will continue for the foreseeable future. But we will also cover political stories that do not belong to Covid, and where they seem most important and interesting, they will take precedence.

Here’s our global coronavirus live blog.

I try to monitor the comments below the line (BTL) but it is impossible to read them all. If you have a direct question, put “Andrew” somewhere and you’re more likely to find it. I try to answer questions and if they are of general interest I will post the question and answer it above the line (ATL), although I cannot promise to do this for everyone.

If you want to get my attention quickly, it’s probably best to use Twitter. I’m in @ AndrewGorrión.
