Two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping after a car was stolen in Birmingham with the owner’s two children still inside, police said.

Officers were alerted to what they called the “shocking incident” around 5 pm Saturday when a man reported that his Seat Leon had been pulled from his driveway with his two sons, ages two and four, inside.

“Firearms, trafficking and response officers were immediately dispatched along with our dog units and the helicopter to participate in the search,” West Midlands Police said in a statement.

At one point, the stolen car was seen driving the wrong way on a dual carriageway before armed officers could stop it on the A38 Bristol Road near the Belgrave junction.

Two male suspects, both 15 years old, escaped from the car, but were quickly detained and arrested by the police.

They face questioning on suspicion of vehicle theft and kidnapping.

West Midlands Police Incident Manager Chief Inspector Lee Wiggan said: “This type of incident is every parent’s worst nightmare, but thankfully we were able to stop the car and reunite the family less than 15 minutes after that was stolen.

“It is a fantastic result for what was a very serious and urgent incident and my thanks to the officers involved, as well as the West Midlands Ambulance Service for their support.”
