Two people have been taken to the hospital and one person has been detained tonight as police face serious assault in Barnstaple.
The assault, described as a “very serious incident” by police, took place on Bear Street in Devon town at around 4:20 pm this afternoon.

Police are advising people to avoid the area at this time.
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police originally said: “Police were called to Bear Street, Barnstaple, around 4:20 pm following reports of a serious assault.
“One person was taken to the hospital and another was arrested at the scene.
“Officers remain in the area and the incident continues.
“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time.”

However, Devon and Cornwall Police modified their statement, clarifying that, in fact, two people were taken to the hospital and one person was arrested at the scene.

Traffic reporting service Inrix says Bear Street, where the incident occurred, remains blocked.
Inrix’s latest alert reads: “Bear Street partially blocked, heavy traffic due to police incident on Boutport Street.
“Around the Green Lanes Mall.
“All bus services operate through the Inland Relief Highway.”
