The cause of death of TV documentary star Phillip Sharp has been revealed.
The 60-year-old, who appeared in numerous television documentaries due to his unconventional lifestyle as a polyamorous rabbi, was found by a relative after he collapsed in a bathroom in Kenya, an investigation was said.
Philip, who died last year, was born in Stanmore, north London, and traveled the world as a missionary worker.
At the time of his death in October 2019, he had been living in Nairobi, Kenya for more than two years, according to an investigation heard Wednesday.
HertsLive reports that he is believed to have written a note the day before he died and that the letter included details about what he would leave behind for his family.
During the proceedings, The Old Court House in Hatfield, Hertfordshire was told that he went to the bathroom at his home and that when he did not come out after “some time,” a relative came to check on him.
The investigation heard that the family member could hear Philip groan and when they kicked the door down they discovered that he had collapsed.
He was taken to a hospital in Kenya where he was pronounced dead on October 28, 2019.
Senior Coroner Geoffrey Sullivan had limited information on all the circumstances of her death, but had obtained a signed death certificate.
The cause of death was respiratory failure with suspected organophosphate poisoning, although the coroner said the evidence he had was limited.
Sullivan said: “What I don’t have is any detail that really leads directly to the events of that day, the events that led to the bathroom when they found him.”
He also did not have “a precise cause of death”, information on existing previous medical conditions and nothing about where and when the note was found.
Typically, those details would normally be examined during a police investigation, but the coroner had not received details from Kenyan officials.
The coroner considered the possibility of suicide because of the note, explained that there “there is some evidence to support it” but not “sufficient evidence” to maintain the legal standard.
For that reason, the coroner recorded an open finding.
The investigation heard that the coroner’s office had tried to obtain more information from the Kenyan authorities, but it was not possible.
It is understood that Philip had “seven wives” and at least “19 children,” and once claimed that God told him to reveal that polygamy was part of a divine plan.
In 2013, he was legally married to one wife and lived with six others for more than a decade, fathering several children, not all Jewish, according to the Times of Israel.
Her unconventional setup was examined in the 2013 Channel 5 documentary The Girl With Seven Mums.
The movie featured her daughter Ellie, then 10, describing what it was like growing up with multiple mother figures.
In 2006 she appeared in a BBC documentary called “Philip and His Seven Wives” and in 2018 she appeared on ITV’s This Morning to defend her lifestyle against ITV favorites Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.
