GOOD NIGHT FROM OLD TRAFFORD
Welcome to our live coverage of the New Years clash between Manchester United and Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Just 72 hours after United beat a West Midlands club, they face another, but this time they do so in second place on the table.
And 2021 could even start with the Red Devils at the top of the pile if they pull off a fantastic 9-0 victory, an idea that’s not entirely unfavorable given some of the results this season has evoked.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team barely seemed to score once against the Wolves on Tuesday until Marcus Rashford threw a deflected shot at the last minute, and now they are without Edinson Cavani as the forward begins a three-game suspension.
Twelve months ago, Villa was consumed in a battle for relegation, but they enter the new year full of hope. Dean Smith’s men sit in fifth place and are on a five-game unbeaten streak in which they have only conceded once.
However, extending that sequence to six games will be challenging if history is anything to go through; Villa has only won one of his last 43 league games with United.
Smith has Tyrone Mings at his disposal again after a one-game suspension, while Ross Barkley is also in the fight for the first time since sustaining a hamstring injury in November.
We will have confirmation from tonight’s teams shortly before the Old Trafford action begins at 8pm.
