Max Verstappen set the pace in difficult wet conditions in final practice for the Turkish GP, as heavy rains gave the drivers even more trouble on an already low-grip “ice track” at an Istanbul Park circuit.

The rain started on Saturday morning and deepened in practice three, with Verstappen’s fastest time of 1: 48.485 on intermediate tires at Red Bull, nearly a second ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Lewis Hamilton, who completed just three laps on wet tires and failed to set a time, said “this is the closest thing to driving on ice you can get” during a session that featured spins and drifts in abundance.

Water on a track that was described as “terrifying” even in dry conditions on Friday was the last thing many drivers wanted and conditions got so bad towards the end of P3 that most decided to stay in the garage.

However, there is expected to be a break in the showers before qualifying, where an unpredictable shooting looms.

Qualifying is live on Sky Sports F1 at 12pm, and will start at 11am
