Dutch prosecutors have confirmed that Donald Trump’s Twitter account was hacked in October despite denials from Washington and the company, but said the “ethical hacker” will not face charges.

The hacker, named Victor Gevers, broke into Trump’s account @realDonaldTrump on Oct. 16 by guessing the password of the US president, Dutch media reports said.

Both the White House and Twitter strongly denied reports that the account had been hacked.

Gevers, 44, immediately revealed the hack, saying the password he guessed was “maga2020!”, In reference to Trump’s catchphrase “Make America Great Again.”

The public prosecutor’s office (Openbaar Ministerie) said: “We believe that the hacker has actually penetrated Trump’s Twitter account, but he has met the criteria that have been developed in the case law to go free as an ethical hacker.”

He added that hacking was a crime in the Netherlands. But he said “special circumstances,” also known in practice as “responsible disclosure,” could prevent prosecutors from taking action.

The Dutch prosecutors made their findings based on an investigation by the cyber unit specialized in the police, called Team High-tech Crime.

“Both the hacker and the US authorities have been informed of the outcome of the investigation,” prosecutors said.
