And to the second stage of this, the 107th edition of the Tour de France, the bumpy 186 kilometer route from Nice to the Alps, yes, a hilly stage on the only day two of the race, before returning to the beautiful old city on the Côte d’Azur.

Before we take a close look (more or less) at the stage and briefly consider who may win later this afternoon and, most likely, take second yellow shirt, the leader’s yellow jersey, now is probably an opportune time to see where we are after just one day.

First, here is the verdict of the first stage of our correspondent Tom cary:

No matter the threat to the race of a coronavirus resurgence, the 107th Tour de France experienced the most chaotic and nervous stage of the early stages on Saturday, a heavy rain that turned the roads of the Côte d’Azur into an “ice rink” . The crash festival that followed caught a number of big-name drivers, including French favorite Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), before Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) claimed victory on the Promenade des Anglais.

It was a thriller, although there were questions about whether the race stewards should have intervened as the crashes mounted. Pavel Sivakov of Ineos Grenadiers hit the deck more than once and ended up losing 13 minutes. Some people thought that Russian could be a dark horse for yellow. No longer.

Meanwhile, our colleagues from The cycling podcast posted its first episode Saturday night, featuring some great interior shots of various riders, including the battered and bruised Pavel Sivakov, crashing not once, but twice in an incomplete initial stage.
