It appears TOTTENHAM’s Carabao Cup clash will be called off after virtually the entire Leyton Orient team tested positive for Covid-19.
SunSport understands that up to 18 players and League Two O’s staff recorded positive tests prior to Tuesday night’s game.
If the third round tie is canceled in the morning, the Spurs will receive a goodbye and Orient will miss out on a £ 100,000 windfall on the game that will be televised on Sky Sports.
With the O’s first team in self-isolation, they even suggested lining up their youth team against José Mourinho’s side because the boys haven’t been in contact with the first team.
Spurs are believed to be unhappy with that prospect amid fears of infection risk just days before a Europa League tie.
SunSport reached out to Orient for comment tonight, but the final decision rests with Public Health England.
Health specialists, concerned about the rise of the coronavirus in the UK, have to determine if the outbreak is serious enough to order Orient’s Breyer Group stadium and training ground to be thoroughly cleaned and all personnel to enter quarantined.
The EFL has been working with clubs to find a solution, and the Spurs have shown their support for their neighbors.
But with zero space in a congested accessory program, there are no possible dates to reschedule the game.
The news justified Tottenham’s decision to pay £ 5,000 for the O’s team to be tested at the weekend.
EFL rules have been relaxed this season, meaning that clubs only had to test on their return to preseason training and again mid-season – the Prem test twice a week.
Plymouth and Mansfield played Orient for the past week and ordered their squads and personnel to be tested.
If the game is canceled, it would be the first match to fall victim to Covid-19 since the lockdown.
Meanwhile, Gareth Bale’s desire to make his second return to Tottenham could hasten his return through injury.
The 31-year-old Welsh star, who suffered a knee injury against Bulgaria earlier this month, will not be fit until after international matches in October.
But coach Mourinho said: “The motivation is high. And when a player has this motivation, it can shorten the recovery period and the period of getting fit. “
