José Mourinho has revealed that he is “so happy” that Tottenham has completed the signing of Matt Doherty, insisting that he “hates” playing against the winger.

The 28-year-old completed a £ 15 million move on Sunday, signing a four-year deal to end his 10-year stint at Wolves, where he made more than 300 appearances.

The versatile full-back has emerged as one of the best in his position with Nuno Espirito Santo, with no Premier League defender scoring more than his 15 goals in all competitions over the past two years.

Mourinho’s tactics will allow Doherty an expansive role once again at Spurs, similar to the attacking position Serge Aurier took last season.

Doherty comes in as Tottenham’s third signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart.

Mourinho has previously expressed his satisfaction with Tottenham’s transfer business, a sentiment that has been echoed once again.

“First of all, I have to thank Mr. Levy and Steve [Hitchen], also the player and the agent who trust us and make it happen, “he told the club’s official website.

“I hate playing him, so I’m so, so happy not to play him again. I’m so happy to have him.

“Incredible career in the Wolves … League One, Championship, Premier League and Europa League. He did everything for them, so I work there.

“I know he is leaving with great pride, but this is a new step for him and he is full of motivation. I am very, very happy.

“We always want to have the best players and the best squad possible. We are going to have months of non-stop competition and we need a better squad than we had last season.

“These three players, Matt, Joe [Hart] and Pierre [Hojbjerg], the club made a great effort to give the squad. It’s very, very important to us that we get stronger. “
