Tottenham

Hugo Lloris – 6

Nothing could be done about the Everton winner.

Matt Doherty – 6

Tottenham rookie Matt Doherty closes in on Richarlison

He created a wonderful opportunity to nearly cap off his Spurs debut with a goal, injecting a rare dose of rhythm and urgency into the hosts’ attack. But, as was identified during the second half, his play behind is a cause for concern – and vulnerability – and the rookie was substituted in the 75th minute.

Toby Alderweireld – 5

He made it look very slow by Richarlison’s rapid advance into goal and spent much of his afternoon struggling to contain Everton’s fast runs.

Eric Dier – 5

Smashed roundly by Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Everton’s first goal. If you want to be successful in your move to center midfield, those are the matches you have to win, or at least not lose so completely.

Ben Davies – 6

He struggled to face James Rodriguez and fortunate that Richarlison made a hash of his spike after receiving the wandering babble from the left back.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 4

He did not fit in with Winks in a midfield partnership that was feared lacking pace and creativity and suffered, in the words of Gary Neville of Sky Sports, “a quiet nightmare.” He misses a mark for rolling after fouling Richarlison, who rightly saw him cautioned at the end.

Harry Winks – 4

Is it unreasonable to have wanted and expected more? He did not supply the zipper and the enthusiasm of Tottenham’s pedestrian possession spells were clamoring. There was no surprise when they pulled it out after an hour.

Lucas Moura – 4

There can’t be much in Moura’s favor when José Mourinho deliberated at halftime on what changes to make to his team’s lineup. The only exception to note was the deployment of Moura in the first half in an unknown and perhaps uncomfortable wide right-wing role. He switched to center for the second half but, a run and a long-range header to the side, he remained largely anonymous.

Dele Alli – 3

Was he hurt? If not, and Alli was retired at halftime the first weekend of the season when he was fully fit, there will be plenty of questions about the forward’s future in the coming weeks. José Mourinho later confirmed that the change was “tactical,” and his subsequent comments about a “lazy press” were timely.

Son of Heung-Min – 5

Heung-Min Son was dangerous in fleeting moments for Tottenham

As usual, Tottenham’s brightest attacking spark, but he couldn’t find an incisive final ball and his set piece delivery verged on terrible.

Harry Kane – 5

What was going through the mind of the England captain during the desperately disappointing Spurs afternoon? Hungry for possession, his greatest achievement was not letting any understandable frustration surface, but it spoke volumes about his isolation that his first touch into Everton’s penalty area came as late as the 80th minute.

Substitutes

Moussa Sissoko – 7

Tottenham’s best midfielder after his presentation at half-time. But there wasn’t exactly a lot of competition.

Steven Bergwijn – 6

It injected a positive rhythm, but it couldn’t have any significant impact.

Tanguy Ndombele – n / a

Dice just 15 minutes as Tottenham rolled the dice and desperately searched for a shape to make a shape.

Everton

Jordan Pickford – 8

The England No. 1 made a brilliant save to deny Alli on a Spurs counterattack after 33 minutes and an even better save denied Doherty with his feet just before the break. He showed presence within his area to clear twice under pressure as the Spurs came in strong. He could be heard throughout the game yelling at his players.

Seamus Coleman – 7

He was kept busy by Son with James Rodríguez positioning himself at the top of the field. Made a major head block to avoid Son’s curling effort. The old school benefited from the new, Coleman tried his luck with a daring half volley in the second half, forcing Lloris to watch him the whole time.

Yerry Mina – 7

It caught him a bit on his heels, as Kane had too much room to find Doherty for the Spurs’ biggest first-half opportunity. With Mason Holgate injured for up to six weeks, he will want to make the spot in the middle alongside Keane his own, and it didn’t hurt his chances against the England leader.

Michael Keane – 7

Almost punished by Kane after cutting Son’s center back post in the first half. He made important clearances as Tottenham strengthened towards the end of the opening period.

Lucas Digne – 7

He didn’t follow Doherty’s run that led to Pickford’s vital save before halftime. It was Everton’s most used ball out, with more touches (90), more passes (63) and center attempts (7) than any of his teammates. Peach off a cross for the Dominic Calvert-Lewin opener.

Allan – 9

He won the ball and recycled it numerous times as it lived up to its ‘bulldog’ nickname. Everton had not had such a player since Idrissa Gueye and, with his reinforced gunpowder midfield, Carlo Ancelotti will be encouraged by this first outing. He did the simple things so effectively and, by himself, he seems to have brought about the necessary cultural change.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 7

He got into challenges to recover the ball for his team and was well positioned on defense to hasten Alli’s attempt in the first half. He won all four games in the first half. His presence will allow players like Gylfi Sigurdsson, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes to play their natural game this season.

Andre Gomes – 7

The Portuguese was allowed much more freedom with Doucoure and Allan behind him. Ordered in possession, completing 37 of his 39 passes (94.9 percent). Substituted in the 68th minute for being considered a doubt before the game.

James Rodriguez – 8

Brilliant on the ball, cutting from the right to his left foot when Davies received a tough task on day one. Having found his range and growing in influence, the Colombian had Lloris reach through his goal with another fine left foot effort that barely deflected.

Snatched up with a good chance early in the second period. But, with images in his head, he will warm the hearts of Evertonians. He made five key passes and his left foot cutting from the right gives Everton something they have rarely had in the Premier League era.

Richarlison – 7

Richarlison stumbles and fires from a tight angle in 15 minutes.

Richarlison stumbles and fires from a tight angle in 15 minutes.

He missed the gift of an opening when he turned down the opportunity to put Everton in front when he held on to Davies’ mistake and circled Lloris, but lost his composure in the vital moment to lift his shot from an acute angle. I almost had too much time to decide with Calvert-Lewin free for the throwback. He didn’t let it affect his game, coming within a second against a lifeless Spurs.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 8

Having failed to score in all 10 games towards the end of last season, he was quietly effective as Everton’s focal point in the first 45 minutes against an uncertain Spurs baseline. Nine minutes into the second period, he rose magnificently to score a well-deserved first goal. With Duncan Ferguson on the sidelines, it came straight out of the Scottish ‘Heading School’ manual.

Substitutes

Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6

With Gomes tired, he allowed his team to continue to control midfield. He lost possession twice in quick succession, but Allan made sure it wasn’t costly.

Moise Kean – n / a

Introduced in the final two minutes of normal time for Calvert-Lewin to trade on the left side with Richarlison pushed down the middle.

Tom Davies – n / a

It appeared in the 92nd minute, when Everton was looking to watch the game, for the elegant Rodríguez.
