Tony Watt: My former Motherwell teammate David Turnbull is made of something different – he has done great things at Celtic.

Former Celtic forward Tony Watt believes his former Motherwell teammate David Turnbull has the skill and mindset to succeed at Parkhead and has tipped the midfielder to achieve “great things”.

Watt, who scored for the Fir Park club in their 5-1 demolition of Glentoran in the Europa League first qualifying round on Thursday night, was delighted when Turnbull sealed a £ 3.25 million move for the Scottish champions. this week.

The 26-year-old spent three seasons at the Glasgow club and, as is known, came off the bench to score the Champions League winning goal over Barcelona in 2012.

However, the Coatbridge-born forward was unable to maintain a regular first-team spot on Neil Lennon’s expensive squad and eventually moved to Standard Liege in Belgium.

Watt, however, believes Turnbull will have little difficulty establishing himself in Celtic’s first team despite the presence of Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham on the team.

The way the Scottish under-21 player responded after his dream transfer failed 12 months ago, after a knee injury requiring surgery was detected at his doctor, gives him confidence that he can thrive.

“I’m happy for him,” Watt said. “We are all looking forward to him. No one has the slightest bit of jealousy or hatred towards him for how charming he is. Nobody has bad feelings towards him. He’s a great kid and he deserves his move. He will move on and do great things.

“He has the temperament you need in a club like that. She will take it easy. You see a lot of people go there and fail. I would bet anything that this boy will not fail because of what he has in his head and obviously at his feet.

“It has what not many people in this country have. I think it will go a long way. It has very good chances. ”

Watt added: “I think that guy is made of something different. He missed the contract of his life, spent a year away, got his salary back at Motherwell, which is not of Celtic quality.

“A lot of people would break down and fail if they had seen the kind of money he had in front of him. But this guy came back, ran the show for a few games and then left and moved again.

“Not many people can do that. People who are linked to Celtic and don’t make that move never come back. That just shows you what kind of guy David Turnbull is to do that. ”

Watt and his Motherwell teammates could face Turnbull at Parkhead in their Premiership match against Celtic if Lennon decides to debut his newest acquisition.

The forward admitted that it will be a strange experience to face someone he has spent months training and playing with. “It will be strange to see him with green and white earrings,” he said.

However, he is confident that Stephen Robinson’s men can build on their 2020/21 season opener win and pull off a surprise.

“Everyone is beatable, everyone can be defeated,” he said. “I think that has been shown in recent weeks. Both Celtic and Rangers have lost points, albeit on artificial grass. We will go there confident.

“Thursday night’s victory gives us a little bit of confidence that we are quality players. We don’t just need to defend against teams like Celtic and Rangers, we can actually play.

“I think that’s the key to beating teams like this: putting your foot on the ball, moving it and trying to tire them out. If you don’t, they will tire you out. ”

Kilmarnock mistreated Celtic. Big boy (Nicke) Kabamba did well. He mistreated them and gave them a game. Hopefully we can do that. I’m not saying it’s going to be me or another forward. But I think we have to face them. If you show respect to a team like that, they will kill you. ”
