Three New Coronavirus Deaths in Merseyside Amid Second Wave Concerns

Three people died in 10 days in Merseyside hospitals in tragedies that could be among the first deaths linked to the recent surge in coronavirus cases in the region.

NHS England confirmed that two people had died in trusts in Wirral and one in Liverpool, bringing the death toll in Merseyside hospitals to 1,120.

A further 140 deaths related to the disease have been recorded at Warrington and Halton hospitals.

Those figures refer to people who died and who “tested positive for Covid-19 or where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.”

The most recent announcement, released on Friday, revealed that a person had died on September 9 at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Royal, Aintree and Broadgreen hospitals.

Two more deaths took place in complexes run by the NHS Foundation of Wirral University Hospital, on September 13 and 16.

They were the first deaths related to the condition in Merseyside hospitals to be confirmed in public NHS figures since September 3.

Given that coronavirus cases have risen across the region in recent weeks, and Liverpool and Wirral hit particularly hard, this means that those who died may have contracted the condition during the surge in infections.

So far in September, Liverpool has seen an increase of 1,069 confirmed Covid-19 cases and Wirral an increase of 683.

Those figures, along with worrying infection rates in Knowsley and increasing cases in Sefton and St Helens, formed the backdrop for the increased social restrictions for Merseyside announced by the government on Friday and taking effect on Tuesday.

The NHS figures only refer to deaths in hospitals, so the actual number of coronavirus-related deaths in Merseyside will be much higher once tragedies in other settings, including residences, are taken into account.

Covid-19 related hospital deaths often take days to be publicly confirmed, so more may have died at local trust facilities in recent days.

The total coronavirus-related deaths attributed to each NHS trust in the region since the start of the pandemic are:

  • Hey Age: 4
  • Liverpool Heart and Chest: 19
  • Liverpool University Hospitals: 483
  • Mersey Care: 3
  • Southport and Ormskirk: 151
  • St Helens and Knowsley: 209
  • The Walton Center: 10
  • Warrington and Halton: 140
  • Wirral University: 241
