Thomas Tuchel believes that Tammy Abraham knows that her only route to the England European Championship team is to regain top form with Chelsea.
The Chelsea manager admitted that Abraham is more focused on forcing his return to Chelsea’s starting lineup than on his situation in England.
Abraham has battled ankle injuries for several weeks, but returned to training thoroughly on Friday and could be involved in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Sheffield United.
Abraham was excluded from England’s last team this week, but Tuchel believes the 23-year-old should focus on Chelsea matters first.
When asked for an assessment of Abraham’s situation in England, Tuchel said: “We haven’t talked about this, in fact I feel him at this point a bit more concerned about his role in our team.”
“I think he clearly knows that a role in our team can improve his chances of having a role in the England team.
“We did not talk about it but I would not be surprised if it was in his head. It is totally normal at this level that the players have their own interests, and one of the interests is to have a role in their team but also in their country.
“These are two goals for Tammy, but in our conversations now it’s just about the next steps here, how to increase her involvement here.
“But at the same time, when you give confidence to the forwards who are on the field, we can’t change all the time, so it’s not easy.
“I accept that it is not too easy, but not too difficult, and I hope he is not too hard on himself or overthinking it, ‘If my situation is like this now, what are the consequences?’
“He has to refocus on his situation and this is what I feel. We have talked about the current situation here at the club and from here he has, every day, the opportunity to find his way back.”
