Hundreds of thousands of people in Hull and East Yorkshire live under Level 3 lockdown restrictions that have closed pubs and restaurants and a limited mix at home.
Millions of people in the east and southeast of England have entered Level 4, the highest Covid-19 level in England, which includes a “stay home” order.
The most severe restrictions were put in place when a new variant of the coronavirus began to spread rapidly in the south east and east of England.
Closures have also started in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and measures have returned to Wales.
It occurs when the official death toll from Covid-19 in the United Kingdom exceeded 70,000 on Christmas Day.

When is the next level review?
The latest Tier rules will be reviewed on Wednesday, December 30. The government has the flexibility to change Tier status prior to reviews, but this is likely to only increase Tier levels with a statement saying it will “take immediate action to protect local communities.”
How are the levels decided for each area?
When the government reviews the levels on December 30, experts will look at 5 key indicators:
- case detection rates in all age groups
- case detection rates in those over 60
- the rate at which cases increase or decrease
- positivity rate (the number of positive cases detected as a percentage of tests performed)
- pressure on the NHS
What is the current situation in Hull and the East Riding?
Coronavirus cases in Hull are on the rise again with three new hot spots where the virus is spreading the fastest.
The latest statistics from Public Health England (PHE) show that coronavirus cases are gradually increasing in Hull. Only three areas registered fewer cases in the seven days leading up to December 21.
In the East Riding, cases appear to be increasing less rapidly and many areas have seen a gradual decline. However, some areas like Kirk Ella, Beeford and around Market Weighton and Driffield continue to have higher rates.
Last rules to celebrate New Years Eve
For those at Level 3, it is worth remembering that you cannot mix indoors, in private gardens, or in most places outside except with your own house or bubble.
However, you can meet in a group of up to six in other outdoor spaces, such as parks, beaches, or countryside.
Bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants must be closed, except for home delivery and take away.
What is Level 2?
Level 2 areas, such as York and North Yorkshire, have more relaxed rules.
You can’t mingle indoors with anyone other than members of your household or bubble, but you can gather in a group of up to six outdoors, even in a private garden or public place.
Pubs and bars may open if they serve large meals and alcohol can be served with that meal.
Pubs and restaurants must close at 11 pm and last orders at 10 pm.
What is Level 4?
At Level 4, non-essential shops, hair salons, and entertainment venues must close.
There is a new “stay at home” instruction from the Government.
People who need to travel for work, education or childcare are exempt and exercise is unlimited.
There are no homes that mix, but one person can meet another person outside in a public space. Support bubbles and those that gather for childcare are exempt.
Level 4 residents must not spend the night away from home and cannot travel abroad.
