La Liga has issued a brief statement to completely deny the field’s claims by Lionel Messi that the Barcelona captain no longer had a € 700 million release clause in his contract.
Messi’s father, Jorge, had insisted that the clause had expired in a statement issued on behalf of the Barça captain on Friday.
Messi’s squad was hopeful that the removal of the termination clause would mean the Argentine could join a new club with a free transfer or for a fee much lower than the clause, with Manchester City still leading the race to tempt him. from the Camp Nou. this summer.
Explaining why he felt the cause was no longer valid, Jorge Messi wrote:
“1 – We do not know which contract they have seen and analyzed to support the claims, only the termination clause applies, even if the player decides to unilaterally terminate their contract after the 2019/20 season.
“2 – It must be a major error on your part. As it is written in clause 8.2.3.6 of the contract signed by the club and the player:
This compensation will not apply when the player has decided to unilaterally terminate his contract after the 2019-20 season is over.
“It is obvious that the compensation of € 700 million, as mentioned in clause 8.2.3.5 above, cannot be applied at all.”
However, it took La Liga only a few minutes to respond to the claims, as they clarified that the clause was still valid in Messi’s contract.
“The 700 million euro buyout clause exists and is absolutely valid,” the league said in a statement.
“His interpretation of the contract is decontextualized and far from its literalism.
