The Christmas ‘carnage’ as the six o’clock rule forces cancellation

FAt present, no more than six people can meet indoors or outdoors in England, which means that holidays between large groups of friends or families cannot continue.

With quarantine restrictions in countries like Spain, France and Portugal, many people have turned to the UK for their holidays. However, the latest ‘Rule of Six’ policy means hotels, tour operators and campsites are facing more cancellations after an already tumultuous year for the industry.

More than 25 per cent of self catering accommodation in the UK is for more than six people. The president of the Professional Association of Self Employed (PASC), Alistair Handyside, warned that the next cancellations of reservations will be a “carnage.”

He told the BBC: “We have worked very hard to make sure we offer a safe environment [for guests] and we are puzzled why the new law affects so much a sector in which it can control its environment. If we don’t get to December with Christmas and New Years, which are the peak weeks, we will see a carnage, honestly. “

One man on Twitter, Adrian Steele, said: “Having already canceled a UK holiday with children and grandchildren (six adults, four babies), we are told to cancel again. Or, change the reservation of the cottage in England and reserve another in Wales or Scotland, where apparently we will not be breaking the law. What a mess.”

The new measures will be enforced through fines of £ 100, which will rise to £ 3,200 for repeat offenders. Boris Johnson said that “safe Covid bailiffs” will urge people to follow the rules.
