The restrictions will change on Monday when the 17-day firewall ends, here’s what you need to know.
The ‘short-sharp’ firewall lockdown began on 23 October when all of Wales was subjected to stricter measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus. But the end of the firewall does not mean the end of restrictions, and the virus is far from gone.
The possibility of a second lockdown is not ruled out, and the Welsh government says one of the best ways we have to reduce the risk of needing more firewalls and locks is to “follow the simple rules that are designed to slow the spread of coronavirus to through our communities. “
From Monday 9th November, everyone in Wales is being asked to continue the following behavior, which has been consistent advice throughout the pandemic:
- Stay away from other people’s homes except in very limited circumstances.
- Limit the number of times you leave your home and the distance you travel
- When you leave home, try to limit the number of different people you see. Better to see one or two people regularly than to see many different people occasionally
- Maintain social distancing, even outdoors
- Meet with people outdoors rather than indoors when possible, even in circumstances where the law allows you to meet indoors
- Work from home if you can
- Wash your hands regularly and follow other hygiene tips
- Isolate yourself if you have symptoms of coronavirus
What are the big rule changes since Monday, November 9?
Here are the main rules and changes that will go into effect on Monday. Not all are different from the fire lock, for example, the requirement to wear a mask in closed public places and the social distance remains the same.
- Except in very limited circumstances, people should not enter the houses or gardens of others.
- When you meet people you don’t live with outside your home, in most circumstances, the absolute maximum number of people you meet indoors or outdoors should be four (not including children under 11 years old).
- Face shields should still be worn in closed public places
- Must be isolated when instructed to do so by NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect
- Hospitality businesses, such as pubs and restaurants, and non-essential shops can reopen

As long as they meet hygiene standards, other venues such as movie theaters, bowling alleys and bingo halls can also reopen.

People should shop alone whenever possible and not meet their friends for a shopping trip.

Pubs, restaurants and bars must have restrictions in place. You won’t be able to order a pint at the bar yet, but you can meet up to three other people to eat and drink inside

If your household has more than four people, you can all go to a pub or restaurant together. The numbers do not include children under the age of 11. Advance reservations will likely be required and test and trace details will continue to be taken.

Hospitality venues that don’t serve alcohol, such as coffee shops, may offer counter service, but the same rule of four applies here as well.

Masks are still to be worn in shops and hospitality venues, when not eating or drinking, and there is a two-hour “rule of thumb” for people to stay in the pub.

Venues can only use table service and alcohol cannot be served in pubs, bars and restaurants or shops after 10pm

Up to 30 people can gather for an “organized activity” outdoors, such as a sports club or exercise class, as long as social distancing and other hygiene measures are in place.

Visits to residences can be resumed and visits to properties and moves can be restarted
The rules around travel
- All travel restrictions will be lifted in Wales on Monday. But the Welsh government is asking people to stay local if possible and “think carefully about any trips they take.”
- Traveling for work, if it is not reasonable for you to work from home, is still allowed.
- People living in Wales can holiday here, but people from England or other parts of the UK cannot travel to Wales for holidays. People in Wales should not go on holiday abroad or to other parts of the UK.
- Extended hearth “bubbles” are back and you don’t have to bubble with the same hearth that was before the firewall
- You can also bubble with a home from a different area, unlike during the local lockdown phase, and bubble with a home in England is allowed, provided you adhere to the latest rules there.
Rules about marriages, religious services, and funerals
- Marriages, civil union ceremonies, and funerals can start over with 15 attendees, and a wedding may be allowed up to 30 guests if an outdoor area is used. However, only 15 people should be in an indoor space at the same time.
- Places of worship are allowed to begin holding communal services again.

Most of the above guidance is not law and therefore will not be enforced by the police.
But the Welsh government guidelines say: “We ask you to think about what is the wisest thing you can do to protect your family, friends and your community, rather than thinking primarily about what you are allowed to do. Just Through all the attempts, the hardest part of following this guide will be that we can avoid further blockages. “
In terms of meeting, the guide says that four is a maximum “not a goal” and that it is better to see the same pair of people often than many different people occasionally.
