A teenager was shot in the leg while riding his bicycle near a busy main road in Huyton.
The 17-year-old was injured near the intersection of Blue Bell Lane and Glade Road around 6:20 pm today (Wednesday).
Immediately afterwards, the boy managed to get to safety on nearby Paxton Road before the police were called.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and the boy was taken to the hospital shortly after for treatment.
Witnesses to the shooting told police that the victim was shot by a man who was also riding a bicycle at the time.
There is now a large cordon in the area as forensic officers and specialists work inside the scene.

Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien criticized those involved in the shooting and tried to reassure the public about what happened.
In a statement, a Merseyside police spokesman said: “We are requesting information after a 17-year-old man was shot in the leg in Huyton tonight (Wednesday, November 25).
“We were called to the intersection of Blue Bell Lane and Glade Road just after 6:20 pm for a report that another man had shot a man on a bicycle, also on a bicycle, in the leg.
“Armed agents attended and there is a cordon to allow a forensic examination of the scene.
“The 17-year-old victim then made his way to Paxton Road before being taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment for serious leg injuries that coincided with a firearm discharge.
“His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
“Officers will remain in the area to conduct forensic, closed-circuit television, house-to-house and witness investigations and to speak with the local community.”
Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien said: “We understand and share the anger that the people of Huyton will feel tonight at the news that a young man has become the victim of gun violence on our streets.
“Fortunately, although serious, we believe that he will recover from his injuries. But the consequences of firing a gun in a residential area could easily have been much worse.
“This will have been a horrible experience for the victim and, of course, deeply distressing for the people who live in the area.
“At this early stage, we are eager to hear from anyone who has seen the incident, or has seen or heard someone acting suspiciously in the area around 6:20 pm.
“He may live near or have been passing through the area at the time it happened.
“Any information you have, dash cam or CCTV footage, could be vital in finding out what happened and, fundamentally, who was responsible.
