Surrey has the fifth highest number of coronavirus cases in the UK, as the latest NHS figures show that 16 more people have died in the county from the disease.

According to NHS England figures released on Friday afternoon (May 1), 16 more patients who had tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospitals operated by Surrey trusts. It brings the total deaths of trusts operating in and around Surrey to 918, from the 902 figure on Thursday (April 30).

Overall, in England, the NHS says 352 people who tested positive for coronaviruses have died, bringing the national total to 20,483.

“The patients were between 30 and 103 years old; 18 of the 352 patients (between 43 and 98 years old) did not have a known underlying health condition,” says an NHS statement. “Their families have been informed.”

The latest government figures for the coronavirus, accurate as of 9am on Friday, say that of 762,279 people with a coronavirus test in the UK, 177,454 tested positive.

As of 5pm Thursday, 27,510 people who had tested positive for coronavirus had died. The figure now includes deaths “in all settings,” such as nursing homes, and not just in hospitals.

Surrey has the fifth highest number of coronavirus cases recorded for top level local authorities in the UK, at 2,559. Kent has the highest, with 3,356, then Birmingham with 2,844, Hampshire with 2,781 and Lancashire with 2,773.

There are five hospital trusts operating in and around Surrey: Frimley Health; Epsom and St Helier; Surrey and Sussex; Ashford and San Pedro; and Royal Surrey County Hospital.

It is important to note that some of the trusts operate hospitals outside of Surrey, for example, St. Helier Hospital is in Sutton.

The NHS does not specify which hospitals the deaths occurred in, so it is unclear how many of the 918 deaths occurred in Surrey hospitals.

See below for a full breakdown of the numbers.

  • Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust – 280 (increase of two)
  • Epsom and St. Helier University Hospital NHS Trust – 238 (an increase of four)
  • Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust – 195 (increase of six)
  • Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust – 130 (increase of three)
  • Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – 75 (an increase of one)
