Sunderland 0-0 Hull City (Hull win 5-4 on penalties)

[ad_1]

Hull left an empty Stadium of Light with a place in the next round of the Carabao Cup after beating Sunderland 5-4 on penalties.

The Black Cats had to pay for failing to convert one of several first-half chances by being tied without a goal at Wearside.

Hull scored all of his shots from the spot after Will Grigg opened the penalty shootout by striking the legs of goalkeeper Matt Ingram.

After the Grigg failure, Malik Wilks, Richie Smallwood, Martin Samuelsen, George Honeyman and Keane Lewis-Potter all scored for the Tigers.

The successful punishments of Max Power, Luke O’Nien, Lynden Gooch and Charlie Wyke weren’t enough, as Sunderland folded in the first round.

Grigg, who already had a goal disallowed for a first-half foul, was also unlucky to have another disallowed for offside when he delivered O’Nien’s shot 21 minutes from time.

Hull’s efforts were few and far between, though former Sunderland man Honeyman put in a great effort.

Wyke made a low effort into Ingram’s arms at the end before the penalties came, after Hull’s late attacks were nothing.
