A teenager was arrested after a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in a shooting while on his way to school.
Police were called to the Grange Farm area of Kesgrave in Suffolk around 8.40am Monday to reports of a shooting.
Suffolk police said the victim suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, where he is being treated.
The suspect, whose age has not been released, was arrested shortly before 11 a.m. in Ipswich, about five miles from the scene.
The teenager is currently being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police are treating the shooting as an isolated incident and it is not believed to be a broader threat to the school or the local community.
Deputy Police Chief Rob Jones said: “It is understandable that the Kesgrave community, particularly in the Grange Farm area, is extremely shocked and concerned. Furthermore, it is inevitable that Ipswich parents will be anxious about the incident this morning.
“I would like to reassure the public that keeping everyone safe is our priority and that incidents like this are extremely rare in Suffolk.
“We have made an arrest as part of this investigation and are currently working with all of our partners and with the schools to make sure everyone feels safe when they pick up their children from school this afternoon and for days to come.
“There will be more police patrolling today, and we are going to provide reassurance in the area. I would ask anyone with information on this incident to come forward.”
Kesgrave High School had previously confirmed that one of its Year 11 students was involved in the incident.
“The police have informed us that there was a serious incident involving one of our Year 11 students, on the way to school,” the school said in a tweet.
“The students at the school are safe and we are handling the situation in constant and close communication with the police.
“Students are to remain in school and will be kept in safe contact with the police. Police will be present in the area and around the school during the school day.
“At this time, we expect students to be dismissed at the end of the school day, at 3:20 p.m., as usual.”
Nearby Friends Walk and Through Jollys have been completely closed and there is a partial closure of Ropes Drive, police said.
Members of the public are asked to avoid these areas.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information on this incident, is asked to contact Suffolk Police at 101 quoting reference 58 CAD from 7 September.
