Egypt’s Suez Canal was blocked on Tuesday after a huge container ship ran aground, according to local media reports.

Traffic across the busy waterway was reportedly blocked in both directions by the 400-meter-long and 59-meter-wide freighter.

The blockade caused a collision of at least 100 vessels seeking to transit between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, according to ship brokers and mapping data compiled by Bloomberg.

The vessel, called Ever Given, is registered in Panama and was reportedly heading to Rotterdam from the Yantian in China when it ran into difficulties.

According to online reports, the ship had traveled through Taipei and Malaysia, and was scheduled to arrive in Rotterdam by the end of the month.

It reached the Suez Canal on Monday night and was stuck Wednesday morning.

The bow of the Ever Given touched the east wall of the canal, while its stern appeared to be lodged against the western wall, according to satellite data from MarineTraffic.com. Several tugs circled the ship, probably trying to push it in the right way, the data showed.
