A store volunteer was punched at the counter after asking a man to remove his baseball cap.

The nasty attack that left the victim with cuts and scratches took place after the culprit entered a convenience store in St. Helens.

Today Merseyside Police aired a grainy CCTV of a man they believe may have information about the attack, at Lavelles on Marshalls Cross Road.

The violent scenes appear to have been triggered by the customer’s unhappiness when a male staff member, described by police as a volunteer, asked him to remove his baseball cap, in accordance with store rules.

The attack took place around 9 a.m. on Monday, July 20, but CCTV footage was released Wednesday of the man police want to track down, including one on a bicycle.

Detectives are releasing images of a man who may have information following the assault by a staff member at a St. Helens convenience store in July.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “The staff member asked the man to remove his baseball cap as per store policy.

“The man approached the counter to pay for his goods and hit and slapped the staff member, causing cuts and scratches. The suspect then left.”

Appealing for information, Detective Inspector Jackie Guinness said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a vulnerable adult who volunteers at the store.

“Being assaulted when doing such work for a local company is completely abhorrent and we continue to work with the company on the investigation.
