Steve Bruce says he couldn’t be happier with his striking force after they combined to defeat the Baggies threat at St James’ Park.
Miguel Almiron was on hand to score his 10th goal for Newcastle in all competitions before Dwight Gayle came off the bench to finish the winner home with a magnificent header that crashed off the crossbar to seal Bruce’s victory.
With Joelinton giving an assist and Callum Wilson having another excellent start despite being on the roster himself, Bruce was delighted with what he saw on a rainy and gray Saturday afternoon in Tyneside.
Bruce said, “We spend a lot of money on the top of the field because it’s the vitally important part.”
“It has been difficult, as always.
“But hopefully with time, and like Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, they are beginning to show fragments and give signals.
“When you already have Callum Wilson and Dwight Gayle, we have a decent variety that will hopefully help us.”
Almirón’s goal turned out to be Newcastle’s 1,300th Premier League goal with the Paraguay international, unknowingly helping himself to a historic goal.
The goal turned out to be the fastest in the Premier League this season after only 19 seconds had elapsed, but Almiron’s was nine seconds away from Alan Shearer’s goal against Manchester City in 2003.
