Steve Bruce believes that comparisons between Bruno Fernandes and Eric Cantona should be tempered until the Portuguese wins trophies at Manchester United.
Fernandes has been a galvanizing force since arriving at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon just over a year ago and has already scored 21 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season.
The impact he’s had has been compared to when Cantona joined the Red Devils nearly 30 years ago, and the Frenchman’s signing was often hailed as the last piece of the puzzle that preceded a period of sustained success.
Bruce acknowledges how influential Fernandes has been, but feels that the attacking midfielder can only be positioned alongside his former United teammate if he brings some silverware to the club.
“What you have to judge people over a period of time is what they have won. Certainly, Eric for us, was the catalyst to go and win things,” Bruce said before the trip from Newcastle to Old Trafford on Sunday morning. night.
“From the way Fernandes has played in the last 12 months, he feels a bit like Eric because it’s his stage. Eric loved everything that involved playing for possibly the biggest and best club in the world.
“Fernandes has done fantastically well doing it, it’s his setting. To even suggest that he’s on the same hymn sheet as Eric is a wonderful compliment to him.
“Now they have to go and achieve and win things like Eric did, and on the big occasions win cup finals and semi-finals. If he does, then of course you can compare him to Eric.”
A year of Fernandes: the new star of Manchester United
By Pete Smith
Bruno Fernandes arrived at Manchester United on January 30, 2020 and spoke of his fond memories of watching Cristiano Ronaldo light up Old Trafford. Twelve months later, he is now their star.
United supporters longed for a game-changing signing during last winter’s window and, with just one day to go, they succeeded, with Fernandes’ £ 46.6m transfer from Sporting Lisbon.
He started racing with amazing style and has continued to make a difference for United, inspiring an unexpected rise to the top of the Premier League table last month.
The stats tell one side of the story, reflecting the remarkable impact the 26-year-old has had at United.
There have been 28 goals and 17 assists in his 52 appearances. Since making his debut against Wolves on February 1, no Premier League player has had more goal participation in all of his club’s competitions.
Fernandes was the Europa League’s top scorer last season, helping United reach the semi-finals, while claiming player of the month awards in record fashion. Unsurprisingly, he also received the United Player of the Year award.
But Fernandes’ influence extends beyond his formidable scoring figures, assists and individual awards. This is a player who has improved those around him.
