Steve Bruce admits that Newcastle United have been left open to criticism after an inept performance against Brighton & Hove Albion.
It’s now seven Premier League games without a win for United against the Seagulls, but they were never with a shout at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
Brighton started and finished the game strong, and Newcastle failed to get a shot on goal down the middle.
Social media platforms were full of negativity after United lost their first game of the season to a team that eliminated the relegation threat with just one game left last season.
When Bruce was asked about the criticism, he said: “I wouldn’t expect anything else.
“We have been brutally beaten at home, so we have to accept what is coming.
“That’s what happens with playing at a great club, you can’t go up and down, but unfortunately in the 15 or 16 months I’ve been here, that seems to happen.”
United had come into the game at the top after beating West Ham in the season opener before advancing to the third round of the League Cup midweek against Blackburn Rovers.
Bruce reflected, “We’ve gone from having a really decent week of everyone being positive to throwing a hand grenade like that.”
The Magpies have a chance to bounce back with a trip to the Globe Arena on Wednesday against League Two Morecambe with a chance to advance to the round of 16 of the competition at stake.
Bruce said, “We have to accept what is coming.
“We have to accept that we were not good enough, and we have to accept that we were careless in our defense and in the way we started the game.
“That is what it is.
“We have another cup tie this week (at Morecambe), and then we will head to Spurs next weekend.
“We will have to go back to basics.”
