Steve Bruce believes Newcastle will gain confidence after fighting for a point against Liverpool.

The coach said the Reds are “a wonderfully talented team” but that he was pleased with the way his men did things at St James’ Park on Wednesday night in a 0-0 draw.

He also admitted that the Magpies “needed a bit of luck” against the team of Jurgen Klopp and goalkeeper Karl Darlow to produce an outstanding display, given the number of huge opportunities that were not converted by players like Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Bruce said: “We needed our goalkeeper to play well and you need a bit of luck along the way, but the effort, the effort and the commitment they showed us the result.”

“I couldn’t be happier. There were posters against Manchester City that pleased me and, in facing City and Liverpool the way we’ve done, I couldn’t be more pleased with what we did. We did it tonight.

“We could say that we played against two of the best teams in Europe in a row in a matter of two or three days.

“You build a little bit of confidence when you take something away from one of the great teams like Liverpool.

“They are a wonderfully gifted team, so we should have a little confidence in them.”

The Newcastle manager also described a tactical change that he is trying to implement and in which he worked to play against Liverpool.

“We are trying to play higher on the court and participate a little higher,” he added.

“Obviously it’s something new for everyone, it’s still a work in progress, but I’m satisfied with the way we did it.”

“We need to use the ball better when we have it and turn it around, those last 10 minutes or so we had some problems.”
